If you’re going to do oversized, you may as well properly commit. Essentiel Antwerp certainly has.

The Essentiel Antwerp Kabala Oversized Coat in Steel Pulse Grey is a women’s grey wool-blend coat cut in a deliberately oversized cocoon silhouette. Crafted from a heavyweight herringbone wool blend, it has dropped shoulders and a fabulous sculptural stand-up collar that gives the whole thing that slightly dramatic, “yes, the coat is the outfit” quality we rather enjoy.

And despite all that volume, it’s incredibly wearable. Steel Pulse is a grey-and-black herringbone that behaves like a neutral, so underneath you can wear pretty much whatever you like.

How to wear the Kabala Coat

Keep everything underneath relatively simple and let the proportions do the talking. We’d wear it with a black roll neck, straight or wide-leg denim and loafers for everyday.

For something smarter, try black wide-leg trousers, a cream knit and boots. Or go tonal with charcoal and grey underneath and add a great black bag.

What do you wear with an oversized grey coat? Black, white, cream, denim, charcoal and burgundy all work beautifully. The trick with a coat this oversized isn’t to make everything else enormous too—a cleaner layer underneath lets that fabulous cocoon shape stand out.

And yes, this is one of those coats that makes popping to Tesco feel rather more glamorous than it actually is.

The Kabala is intentionally very oversized, with a cocoon silhouette, dropped shoulders and plenty of volume. Essentiel Antwerp is known for playing with oversized proportions, and this is absolutely one of those pieces.

I found an actual garment measurement for this exact style:

Size S — front length: 115.5cm / approximately 46 inches.

The model shown by one UK retailer is 5’10” and wears a size S, which gives a useful indication of just how deliberately generous the silhouette is.

A BWD note on sizing: don’t get too hung up on the number with Essentiel Antwerp. The brand is known for its oversized silhouettes and, depending on the style, its nominal UK 4 can often comfortably work on someone who would normally wear a UK 8. The Kabala is specifically designed to be oversized, so if you don’t want quite so much volume, we’d definitely consider sizing down.
